Jedha was a desert moon of NaJedha, and was home to many different religious cultures, including the Church of the Force. It was occupied by the Empire, which was extracting the native kyber crystals. Saw Gurrera's partisans strongly opposed the Imperial presence there, and frequently raided the crystal shipments from Jedha City to Imperial research facilities on Scarif or Eadu, where they would be used to power the superlaser on the Death Star. Once the Death Star was completed, Jedha was used as it's first test, with Jedha City as the target. Reportedly all but three percent of Imperial forces were evacuated from the planet, those who did not dying in the same way as the partisans. The entire planet was not destroyed, but it was rendered uninhabitable in the area of the blast. All but a few partisans on the planet were killed, but some of those who were in Imperial prisons and on off-world missions survived, some becoming the Dreamers. Some rebels did escape, such as Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso, who later assisted in the theft of the Death Star plans on Scarif.
